Hong Kong 44km Around The Island Race - 2011

On Sunday 20th November 2011, Austcham Paddle Club took part in the Hong Kong Around The Island Race.
This is the 2nd year the club has sent a crew to complete the 44 km circumnavigation around Hong Kong Island. The race is extremely challenging to everyone competing due to the unpredictable choppy swells of the busy shipping harbour and 'big wave bay' which doesn't have that name for no reason. The 2011 race was in a league of its own with much larger swells, wind and wash compared to the conditions from last year. All of that considered, we again put in a decent effort. Our mixed team competed in the largest category and the competition was tough. We can happily report that after 4 hours and 37 minutes, we finished 5th in our category.
Congratulations to the OC crew: Luke R, Luke E, Mike, Dave, Christoph, Lindsay, Natalie, Debster, Steph W and Analu. Special mentions to Debster and Steph who took part in their first ever international OC race and ANALU who steered and then paced nearly 95% of the race. Great job!
