Singapore Dragon Boat Festival - 800m

Share

On the 9th & 10th of July 2011, Dragon Boaters from across Singapore and Hong Kong took part in the Singapore Dragon Boat Festival at Bedok Reservoir. All races were 800 meters.

The Aussie's hard work and effort with training both in and out of the water in the lead up to this race really pushed us up the ranks, showing that the team keeps improving each race and the club on a whole, gets better every year.

Austcham Paddle Club had an extremely successful weekend with the following results:

Expat 18 crew (mixed): GOLD!!!! 1st place International Business Community Grand Final (this means... THE BEST expat team in the country... again)

Open 20 crew (mixed):  4th place National Championship Grand Final (the fourth best mixed team in the whole of Singapore and 2/10ths of a second off bronze).

Men's 20 crew:  4th place Minor Final (huge effort, got faster every race)

Clubs 10 crew:  6th place Grand Final (blanket finish only a couple of seconds across the field)

Women's 10 crew:  BRONZE!!! 3rd place National Championship Grand Final (this means... 3rd best and fastest womens boat in the country, first National Championship medal ever for our Women's team)

Well done Austcham ...... Aussie Aussie Aussie  Oi Oi Oi !!

Gold! German Manoeuvre Cup

Congratulations to the Austcham Dragon Boat team for winning GOLD at the German Manoeuvre Cup on the weekend. As usual the boat is filled with our fantastic paddlers who always do a great job - but this race relies heavily on the Steersman manoeuvering through buoys, doing hair pin turns and even paddling backwards!  Congrats to everyone that paddled (and the supporters who cheered them along)

Singapore Waterfest

The dragon boating community in Singapore is so lucky to enjoy one of the most gorgeous settings to paddle in at Marina Bay.  That very fact is celebrated at Waterfest, this year held on Saturday 2nd July.  In a display of water activities the expat dragon boat teams gather for a 500 metre race down towards the Marina Barrage in a hotly contested race in which the winner receives $500.

Repeating our Aussie success from last year, the Austcham Paddle Club WON again, smashing the other boats by at least 2 boat lengths in a time of 2 minutes 12 seconds.

Congratulations team Austcham!

Hamilton Island Cup - Outrigger

Share

Hamilton Island Outrigger Cup is one of the largest outrigger races in Australia.  It is carried out over four days with every combination of OC paddling and distances including OC1, OC2, OC6, Stand up paddle, 8km, 16km and the 42km marathon change race. Austcham paddle club started training at the beginning of February to send a team over to compete in only our 3rd international event after Gold Coast Cup (2010) and Hong Kong ATIR (2010).  After 5 months of training in which each individual paddled more than 800km each and completed 100 sets of 1km sprints - our efforts were shown in the medal haul of bringing 3 BRONZE MEDALS back to Singapore.

Congratulations to:

Luke 8km OC1 Open Mens Bronze

Susan & Caroline  8km OC2 Open Womens Bronze

Our whole team winning BRONZE in the Mixed Open 42km marathon

Luck was on our side for the first 3 days with beautiful, calm, flat North Queensland water conditions.  However on the morning of our 42km marathon we woke to howling 30 knot winds and 4 metres ocean swells.  Considering those conditions are unlike anything we've experienced in Singapore, the bronze medal we won for that race is particularly important.

Congratulations to all those in the team:   Analu, Caroline, Susan, Steph Kerr, Natalie, Luke, Mike, Christoph, Lindsay, Adrian, Simon and Chris Kerr.

Divas Race 2011

Share

One of the highlights of the Dragon Boating calendar is the Diva's race.  Held at Kallang Water Park it's a unique event where only the girls race in a 300 metre race and the men get the afternoon off (well... not completely).  It's up to the guys to cheer the girls on and perform an outstanding 'drag performance' which is always a spectacular event.  Well done Austcham team....  I'll let the picture speak for itself... gorgeous boys, just gorgeous.
